A Camping Air Mattress Gives You More Reasons to Love the Outdoors

September 2nd, 2010 by airmattress

Say goodbye to uncomfortable, restless nights on the camping grounds because manufacturers have created a wide array of camping air mattresses specifically designed to give comfort to all campers out there, regardless of the type of camping you’re doing. A sleeping bag or a regular mattress will do if your trip only entails sleeping in a cottage on a wooden or bamboo bed and you just need cushions for additional support. But if your camping trip includes sleeping inside a tent, then you would need a good air mattress to keep you comfortable while you sleep under the stars.

Camping air mattresses are growing increasingly popular for those who love to sleep outdoors; it has become a necessary item since it makes possible for campers to sleep soundly at night. A good night’s sleep is very important to campers since hiking to the camping grounds and exploring outdoors can be physically exhausting. Campers can get weary after an exhilarating day of exploring, so having a very comfortable air mattress to rest on is definitely something to look forward to. There are different types of air mattresses and choosing the best one depends largely on how many are going to occupy it and the size of your tent. When selecting an air mattress, you need to seriously consider the size of your tent. Make sure that there is still enough room for you to move about with the mattress inside. Also, you have to make sure that the mattress will fit inside most especially if you are camping in a tent. If you have a small or regular size tent, then you should go for mattresses that are specifically made for small tents. The great thing about a mattress for camping is that all of them are fairly light and portable. In addition, these mattresses can be easily rolled or folded into a compressed size so you won’t find it hard to carry it with you during the hike and it can easily fit in your car.

Another good thing about having a camping air mattress is that a lot of them are designed to be higher off the ground. This is great especially if you are going camping with your kids. Some kids are afraid to sleep close to the ground, and there are children who are scared to sleep outdoors. What better way to address their fears with a comfortable air mattress that feels similar to their own bed at home! Making them sleep in an air mattress will help them adjust more easily to their surroundings. This will greatly benefit too, because having well-rested kids normally translates to children who generally are not cranky and up for anything in the morning.

Today, air mattresses come in different sizes and textures to give you more options depending on your camping needs. There are king sized, queen sized, full sized, twin and single beds. There are even air mattresses that have a double purpose – a couch during the day and a bed at night.

Bed Sores and Alternating Pressure

August 23rd, 2010 by airmattress

Sometimes it is necessary to remain seated or bedridden for an indeterminate amount of time. Whether you suffer from paralysis or are recovering from surgery, some situations cannot be helped. While some definitely need the time to recover from illness, there are side effects to prolonged inactivity that can hinder a full recovery. Bed sores are the most common, but the good news is that they are treatable and preventable.

What are bed sores?

Bed sores are also known as pressure sores, pressure ulcers, decubiti, or decubitus ulcers. They begin as red, painful areas on the skin (often the legs and backside) and may turn purple or even black if undetected or untreated. In some cases, bed sores can lacerate and become infected, causing further medical problems. Bed sores are of particular concern among the aged and paralyzed, as they can lead to fatal conditions. Actor Christopher Reeve, paralyzed after an accident, succumbed to illness brought on by severe bed sores that became infected.

What causes bed sores?

Inactivity is the most common cause of pressure sores. Sores develop on the skin when the blood supply is cut off from that particular area of the body. As the skin dies it becomes rough and discolored, and very painful when pressure is applied.

Alternating pressure in prevention and treatment

The best way to prevent bed sores is good blood circulation to all parts of the body. Relieving pressure points in the legs and coccyx muscles can promote healthy blood flow and in turn regenerate healthy skin. For this purpose, alternating pressure may be applied as part of treatment if a patient is unable to move or leave a chair or bed.

Alternating pressure refers to a device that inflates and deflates in sections. Think of an air mattress or air seat cushion. As one pocket, the air is stagnant and does not move. When you sit on one, it may feel like sitting on an elevated version of the chair. Circulation remains the same.

Alternating pressure, however, works in a cushion devised of two or more air bladders interconnected to alternate inflating and deflating. Some bladders rise while others fall, and vice versa. This constant movement in a cushion lifts and shifts the body in place, so even though one is sitting there is opportunity for better circulation.

Where there is better blood flow, naturally, there is less discomfort. The technology of alternating pressure is not exactly new, as it has been used in hospitals to treat patients with bed sores. This is because alternating pressure keeps the blood moving and the skin healthy, allowing it to breathe. When skin breathes, it maintains a healthy color and elasticity.

For people suffering bed sores, it is advised to consult a physician or therapist with regards to alternating pressure cushions for pain relief. A cushion will not cure the ailment, but can make recovery and treatment more comfortable.

Jumping Dogs and How to Control Them

August 22nd, 2010 by airmattress

Jumping dogs are created by their own masters and owners. When the dog was a puppy they thought it was cute for him to jump on them or climb on their leg. As he grew older he was never told to stop so he continued doing it. Now when he is a fifty pound dog he believes he is allowed to do it and it is his way to welcome his master.

It is never too late to train and discipline your dog. It is better if you start doing it when he is a puppy but old dogs do learn tricks and discipline. Teaching them not to jump on you is something you must teach them immediately upon their arrival or you might regret it later. When dealing with an older dog have patience and don’t let up, eventually he will learn and follow your instructions.

Here are some tips to help you along:

Step #1 – Have a Command that Means “Off”

The first thing you must teach your dog or puppy is an “off” command. You can use any one syllable word you want but be sure to remember it. Use this command immediately when your dog or puppy starts to jump on someone. Do not say any more words or laugh. Keep a straight face and repeat this command constantly so he knows what you are talking about and that you are serious and mean it.

Step #2 – The “Sit” command

Teach your dog how to sit as early as possible. Every time your dog approaches you order him to sit at your feet. Caress him or scratch his head as a complement every time he obeys. Soon he will understand that when he approaches you he must sit by your feet and he will be petted. This will cancel the jump option in his head and he will rather get a pat on the head for sitting every time he comes up to you. This will also teach him that you are standing there and not going anywhere so he doesn’t need to jump at you.

Step #3 – Look at him in the eyes

When you say hello to him upon arrival, stop down to greet him. Look into his eyes and pat him on the head, say his name and continue scratching his head. When you get down to his level and he can look you in the eyes he will be happy. Eventually, with a little repetition he will not feel the need to jump up on you because he will know that you will come down to his level to pat him.

Step #4 – Punishment and reward

Dogs are like little children; they don’t really understand what you are saying to them. They must learn from trial and error. If during training or even after training is over your dog does not obey your commands repeatedly. It is time to give him negative feedback so put him in his kennel for a while, or send him outside to the patio without letting him back in. the next time he does not obey your commands he will remember that the last time he disobeys he was punished and he will react to that. Punishment should not be five minutes, you must make him feel sorry and let him know that you are not happy with him disobeying your orders.

Constant repetition and review of these commands and instructions will eventually sink into your dog’s head. He will understand that jumping is not good for him and that you do not like it. He will also understand that when he disobeys he will be punished too. Dogs are smart animals and usually it does not take them long to know their masters and what they are expected to do. Repetition and patience are the key to success. Reward is something that sticks in their minds so don’t forget to reward him when he does the right thing.
